5 Recovery Myths That Waste Your Money (Starting With Lactic Acid)

The recovery industry runs on a handful of ideas that sound scientific, feel intuitive, and are mostly wrong. Some of them sell products, including ours. We'd rather you bought a pair of recovery boots for a reason that holds up.

Here are five myths that cost Australians money every year.

Does lactic acid cause the soreness you feel two days later?

No. This is the most durable myth in fitness and it's been wrong for decades.

Lactate does build up during hard efforts: that's the burning sensation mid-set or up a climb. But it clears from the blood within roughly an hour of finishing. The ache that shows up 24 to 48 hours after leg day is delayed onset muscle soreness, and it's associated with microscopic damage to muscle fibres and the inflammatory response that follows. Different mechanism, different timeline, entirely different thing.

Why it matters commercially: any product sold on "flushing out lactic acid" is describing a process that finished while you were still in the car park. If a brand leans on that phrase, it tells you something about how carefully they've read the literature. We don't use it, and we're deliberately careful about what we claim in our honest look at whether recovery boots work.

Is more pressure always better?

No, and this one costs people comfort as well as money.

There's a widespread instinct that if 60 mmHg feels good, 120 must be twice as good. In practice, most people find their useful range sits well below maximum, and cranking the dial to the top usually just means you cut the session short because it's unpleasant. A session you'll actually finish beats a session you'll abandon.

The related waste is buying a machine specced on its headline pressure number when you'll never use the top third of the range. If you're not sore, did you waste the session?

No. Soreness is a poor proxy for training quality.

DOMS is driven heavily by novelty and eccentric loading: new exercises, downhill running, a longer session than usual. A well-trained athlete repeating familiar work may feel almost nothing and still be adapting perfectly well. Meanwhile a beginner who's wrecked for three days hasn't necessarily trained better; they've just trained differently to what their body knows.

Chasing soreness as a marker pushes people toward constant novelty and higher injury risk. Track your loads, your sleep and whether the work is getting easier at the same output. Those tell you more than how much the stairs hurt.

Can recovery tools make up for bad sleep and poor eating?

Not even slightly, and this is where most recovery spending genuinely gets wasted.

Sleep is the single largest lever anyone has on recovery, and it's free. Adequate protein and total energy intake come next. Nothing you plug into a wall competes with those two. If you're averaging five and a half hours a night and eating erratically, a compression device is a rounding error.

Australian buying guides routinely describe A$800 to A$1,000 as the "budget tier" for recovery boots, which is a strange sentence when you write it out. That figure reflects distribution costs, retail margins and brand positioning far more than it reflects what's inside the machine.
